Your pick of Buona's Favorite Books for 2013:
Written in the first person POV of Drew Evans, the handsome, egotistic playboy investment banker at Evans, Reinhart and Fisher, and addressed to "you," his audience, reading gives you a feeling that you're hanging out with your asshole guy friends, drinking beer. He offers no apologies for the way he is. Maybe his mom and sister doted on him too much, maybe he was just so used to having it all. And this leads to your typical Judith McNaught hero who has a different girl in his bed each time -- Oh wait, he's worse because he never even brings women to his bedroom nor does he even bother to learn their name. -Buona
I struggled in my Goodreads rating: I went from a 4 to a 5 and back down to a 4 again so I'm finally settling for a 4.5. My feelings are all over the place after the ending. I agree with what she did, but it was such a sacrifice. The only thing that's saving me is that there's going to be a Part Two to look forward to. Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! I absolutely can't wait until February 2014! -Buona
This didn't make it to my favorites shelf because it's truly disturbing and I probably won't be re-reading it. But that first read was downright awesome. Read this if you're looking for something original, unique, and refreshing.
I really enjoyed The Naturals, for several reasons. First, I'm really into the concept of profiling, the idea that you can tell a lot about people from how they act, how they dress, how they like their eggs. Cassie walks us through her thought processes when she goes about uncovering someone's personality, but she also says that there are certain insights that she can't explain, that are more of a gut feel -- this is what makes her a Natural, and what makes her and Dean so valuable to the FBI, who, although they've been trained in profiling, aren't Naturals. -Dia
Same old story and yet, every feeling, every sarcastic remark hits the spot. I love how Kasie West takes her time in building Xander and Caymen's attraction to one another: the walks to school with the pre-sipped hot chocolate, the career days where they help each other find their paths. -Buona
Here's my secret. Apart from trashy romance novels, I read management and self-help books too. Dia's reference on our Tangled review to Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In reminded me that I had yet to grab a copy of the Facebook COO's book. It had been recommended to us a couple of times at work by senior women in the company. -Buona
